Legal Requirements for a Marriage in the Republic of Ireland

All couples wishing to have their Irish wedding ceremony recognised as a legal marriage must lodge a "notification of intention to Marry " with the HSE

How to Register your Intent to Marry

1st

Firstly, you need to contact your local HSE office at least 3 months before your wedding date and up to 12 months in advance of your wedding.

2nd

Book your HSE appointment if you wish to legally marry in Ireland in less than 12 months from now. 

3rd

The ceremony must be conducted by a registered soleminser and take pleace at approved venues, either indoors or outdoors.

What documents do we need to register our intent to marry?

There are several documents you both will need to register your intent to marry.

PPS Number. Passport. Birth certificate. proof of address (original and photocopy from within the last 3 months). Final divorce, dissolution, or nullity decrees (if applicable). Spouse or civil partner death certificate (if applicable). Immigration status evidence (should you or your partner not be Irish citizen or citizen of another EU state. A completed data capture form. 

You will, of course need to have the €200 notification fee. 

Details of your date and location of the intended date of marriage.

Details of proposed celebrant or solemniser.

The names and date of birth of your two proposed witnesses.
